Abstract

ABSTRACTS The title of this study is The Analysis of Illocutionary Acts in a Movie Entitled “Twelve Years a Slave”. This study isaimed at finding out the types of illocutionary act in Twelve Years a Slave Movie” and describing the intended meaning of each types of illocutionary act in the conversations. The analysis of this study concerns with the characters’ utterancesand the intended meaning of their utterances during the conversation. The data in this study were obtained from a drama movie entitled Twelve Years a Slavewhich is produced by Steve McQueen (2013). The process of collecting data was done through documentation method. The theories applied to support this study are speech act theory by Searle to find out types of illocutionary act in each conversation. In order to find more accurate analysis of illocutionary act, the writer also used the situational context theory proposed by Halliday to find out the context of situation in each types of illocutionary act. After that, the writer was interpreting the intended meaning of each types of illocutionary act based on the analysis of illocutionary act based on situational context. The descriptive qualitative method is applied in the analysis. The intended meaning of characters’ utterances is the topic discussed in this undergraduate thesis. The data are focused on the conversation of the characters in particular situation. In analyzing the first problem, the speech act theory proposed by Searle supported by situational context theory proposed by Halliday was used in this study. In answering the second problem, the writer interpreted the intended meaning of illocutionary act based on the analysis in first research problem. From the analysis, the finding shows that five types of illocutionary acts were found in this study, such as representatives (insisting, asserting, claiming), directives (command and ordering), commissives (threatening and promising), declarations (excommunicating and sentencing) and expressive (expresives of attitude and congratulating).
