Abstract

Tourism is increasingly becoming a highly important economic activity. One can also notice increasing North-South tourism, whereby tourist from the more developed countries in the North move to the less developed countries in the South. Tourism may potentially lead to mutual benefits and thus to so-called win-win situations for both the tourists from the North and for the receiving countries in the South. The obvious benefit for the countries in the South is that tourism may generate large amounts of much needed foreign currently and thus constitute an important contribution to economic development in the South. Potentially, there can be huge benefits for the tourists as well. Tourism may enrich their life; tourists from the North may be confronted with the rich culture of developing countries and also, for example, with the importance of local customs, which may largely have disappeared from the more commercialized world in the North. Ideally, sustainable tourism could bring about a greater awareness among the northern tourists of problems of development in the South, and could also lead not only to a larger willingness to contribute (even financially) to the development of the South, but also to more respect for the differences, inter alia, in cultural background.
