Abstract

There has been an increase in the global economy and in open trade, in particular since the creation of the World Trade Organization (the WTO). This also applies to the tourism business. Many studies have shown that the growth and development of the tourism industry have both a positive and a negative impact on tourist destinations. Bali, Indonesia, is one of the tourist destinations thus affected. The positive impact of these activities consists of increased tax revenues, job opportunities for communities, and, in the case of Bali as a tourist destination, it has been reported that there is no doubt that tourism is very important to the economic survival of Bali. Collaboration between the World Wildlife Fund and the World Bank resulted in a post Bali-bombing economic study that confirmed that livelihoods on the island would be greatly affected if tourism were to go. On the other hand, the negative impact of tourism activities consists of environmental damage, such as damage to the natural ecosystems, air pollution, exploitation of water resources, destruction of coral reefs as well as damage with regard to social dimensions, such as tourist cultures that may not necessarily match the local culture.
